Eleven affordable homes in Crowborough are due by the end of 2026, the council estimates. Twelve council homes are now being built at Coopers Green, Buxted.

Wealden District Council is building 12 affordable homes at Coopers Green, in Buxted parish, about six miles south of Crowborough. Ten will be let at an affordable rent and two sold through shared ownership. The council announced the scheme on 26 October after a bricklaying ceremony on site. What is being built in Crowborough

The council’s list gives estimated completion dates of October to December 2026 for both Crowborough schemes. It warns that all dates are indicative and could slip.

Scheme Homes Landlord Estimated completion
Millbrook Garden Centre, Tubwell Lane 4 one-bed houses, 2 two-bed houses, 1 three-bed house, all for affordable rent Wealden District Council October to December 2026
Steel Cross 4 two-bed flats for affordable rent Town and Country Housing Group October to December 2026

The Millbrook site is the former garden centre on Tubwell Lane (TN6 3RJ). Its outline permission, WD/2020/2164/MAO, allows up to 27 homes in place of the garden centre, and the council’s seven homes are part of that development. (Wealden planning register)

The council’s list names the second scheme only as “Steel Cross”. One permission there is the 120-home phased development east of Green Lane and Palesgate Lane, WD/2023/1798/MAJ, which must include 40% affordable housing. (Wealden planning register)

The Buxted homes

The Coopers Green homes are on land west of Five Ash Down Road. They are part of a 33-house scheme by the developer Greymoor, approved by the council’s planning committee in July 2024 (WD/2023/2729/MRM). (Wealden planning register)

The council’s 12 homes are:

  • five one-bedroom flats and two one-bedroom maisonettes, for affordable rent
  • two two-bedroom houses for affordable rent
  • one three-bedroom house for affordable rent
  • two two-bedroom houses for shared ownership

The council’s release says the development is expected to be finished in 2027. Its list narrows that to April to June 2027.

Greymoor applied on 15 October for a temporary sales board on the site. Comments on that application close on 16 November. (Wealden planning register, WD/2026/2091/A)

What the council says

Councillor Daniel Manvell, the council’s lead councillor for housing, benefits and revenues, said the homes were part of “a four-year programme to build and purchase approximately 170 new affordable council homes”.

“We have focused on building smaller one-and two-bedroom properties, as we know these are in high demand,” he said.

He said 506 new affordable homes were built in the district last year, which was 40% of all new homes delivered.

The release says Coopers Green “builds on the success of Coronation Place”, an earlier council scheme.
