Framfield Road at Buxted is shut day and night to 13 November. The A272 at Hadlow Down closes 1 to 3 October. Uckfield line buses run to at least 5 October.

The September night closures are done. The A22 at Wych Cross and the A264 at Withyham both finished at 6am on Saturday 19 September, and the long job has begun instead: Framfield Road at Buxted is now closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until Friday 13 November. The A272 at Hadlow Down is running under temporary traffic lights and closes fully from 1 to 3 October.

On the trains, the points failure is fixed but the speed restriction is not. Every three hours the London train now stops short at Crowborough, with a bus onward to Uckfield, until at least Monday 5 October.

Framfield Road, Buxted: closed round the clock until 13 November

This is the one to plan around, and it is now live. The stone culvert under Framfield Road is being extended at its upstream end and given a new headwall, with new kerbs, a drainage gully, timber fencing and verge markers. Site teams work 7.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, but the road itself stays shut the whole time.

Framfield Road is closed between Limes Lane and Orchard Lane, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until Friday 13 November 2026. The signed diversion runs via Limes Lane, Nan Tucks Lane and Orchard Lane, with temporary stop and go boards managing traffic on Limes Lane.

Two details residents will want. Pedestrians cannot get through either, and access to properties on Framfield Road is only possible from the Orchard Lane end, on foot or by car. East Sussex Highways says waste collection will continue as normal. Scheme page.

A22 Whitesmith, Chiddingly: contingency nights until Friday

The patching between the Woodland Centre and the BP Garage on the southern A22, towards Hailsham and Eastbourne, was aimed to finish inside the week ending 19 September. The contractor has kept the overnight closure window open as contingency for this week, in case weather delayed any of it, with a diversion via the A26 and A27 if it is used.

One thing worth knowing: the scheme page’s update names Friday 25 September as the end of the contingency period, while its header says Saturday 26 September. We quote both rather than pick one. Scheme page.

A272 Hadlow Down: lights now, closed 1 to 3 October

High-friction surfacing, refreshed road markings and new signs and posts on the A272 between Pound Green Lane and the A267 junction, running until 6am on Saturday 3 October.

It runs in two stages. Until Wednesday 30 September the road stays open under temporary traffic lights. From Thursday 1 October to Saturday 3 October it is closed to through traffic, with a signed diversion via the A26, Bunny Lane and the A267. Scheme page.

B2100 Wadhurst Road, Mark Cross: 28 September to 2 October

Drainage CCTV surveys and high-pressure jetting, 8pm to 4am, Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October 2026. The closure runs between the Tunbridge Wells Road junction and a point about 50 metres from the Lazy Fox, with a signed diversion via the A267 and the B2099. Bus services will be diverted. Station Road, Hailsham: one day, 1 October

Vegetation cutting opposite Downland Veterinary Group, Thursday 1 October, 8am to 4pm. Full closure, diversion via the A295, the B2104 and Saltmarsh Lane. Scheme page.

B2096 Battle Road, Punnetts Town: one night, 2 October

Road stud replacements between Rookery Lane and Middle Lane, Friday 2 October, 8pm to 6am. Full closure, diversion via the B2203, the A267 and the A271. Buses will be diverted. Scheme page.

A265 Heathfield Road, Burwash: 5 to 10 October

A return visit. An unexpected water leak stopped the county finishing its earlier carriageway improvements here, so the remaining patching, ironwork adjustments, fresh markings, road studs and high-friction surfacing run 8pm on Monday 5 October to 6am on Saturday 10 October, between Willingford Lane and Batemans Lane. B2099 Pashley Road, near Wadhurst: 6 to 17 October

Targeted carriageway patching on the B2099 Pashley Road and Ticehurst Road at Hurst Green, from the A21 to Gibbs Reed Cottages, 7pm to 6am, Monday to Friday nights only, from Tuesday 6 October to 6am on Saturday 17 October 2026. Full closure, diversion via the A21 and the B2087. This one is east of Wadhurst rather than near Crowborough, but it is on the route to Hawkhurst and the A21. Scheme page.

B2102 Framfield Road, Blackboys: lights, 7 and 8 October

New signs, posts and verge markers between The Oaks and Holly Grove, Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 October, 8am to 4pm. The road stays open under temporary traffic lights. Worth knowing if you are already detouring around the other Framfield Road, at Buxted, three miles north. Scheme page.

A267 Mayfield Road, Mark Cross: 12 to 24 October

Targeted carriageway patching on the A267 from Wadhurst Road to Catts Hill, 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday nights only, from Monday 12 October and finishing at 6am on Saturday 24 October 2026. Full closure, diversion via Bunny Lane, the A26 and the A22. Scheme page.

Worth noting: the A267 at Mark Cross is the road that usually carries the A22 diversion when Wych Cross is shut, and Bunny Lane and the A26 carry this one.

B2096 Cade Street and Battle Road, Heathfield: 19 October to 4 November

Surfacing and targeted patch repairs between the A265 and Upper Greenwoods Lane, 7pm to 6am nightly from Monday 19 October to Wednesday 4 November 2026, with no weekend working planned. Full closure, diversion via the A271, B2104, A267, B2203 and A265. Scheme page.

Now finished

  • A22 Millbrook Hill and Wych Cross, Nutley. The September night closures ended at 6am on Saturday 19 September.
  • A264 East Grinstead Road, Withyham. Same finish, 6am on Saturday 19 September. The evening run to East Grinstead and Gatwick is clear again.
  • Blackdon Hill, Rotherfield and the B2188 Cherry Garden Hill, Groombridge drainage survey, both done earlier in September.

The trains: a bus to Uckfield every three hours, until at least 5 October

The points failure that wrecked mid-September is fixed; National Rail’s incident record for it is closed. What remains is the speed restriction between Oxted and Uckfield, the legacy of the summer’s dry weather, and Southern has rebuilt the temporary timetable around it. For Crowborough the shape is simple: the trains still come here. Every three hours the London Bridge service terminates at Crowborough instead of Uckfield, with a replacement bus covering the last leg. Monday to Friday:

  • Terminating at Crowborough: the 07:07, 10:07, 13:07, 16:07 and 19:07 from London Bridge
  • Starting from Crowborough: the 08:33, 11:33, 14:33, 17:33 and 20:33 to London Bridge
  • The 22:07 from London Bridge goes no further than Oxted, Monday to Thursday (on Friday it runs to Crowborough). The notice names buses only between Crowborough and Uckfield, so check before relying on that last train
  • The extra 07:03 from Uckfield is cancelled, but the 06:07 from London Bridge and the 07:33 from Uckfield carry extra coaches

Saturdays follow the same pattern; Sundays run to the normal timetable. Tickets are accepted at no extra cost on Southeastern between Tunbridge Wells and London and on Southern and Thameslink via Haywards Heath or Three Bridges. Uckfield and Buxted car park season ticket holders can park free at Crowborough and Eridge.

Two more things this week. Overnight engineering closes the line north of Oxted from about 11.30pm, Monday to Thursday nights, with buses between East Croydon and Oxted and an additional bus from Crowborough to Uckfield. (Southern, planned engineering) And Southern and Network Rail have published a joint apology for the line, with senior managers taking questions at Uckfield station on Friday 25 September and Crowborough station on Friday 2 October, both 7.30am to 9am. What it means for you

  • Buxted is the long one. Framfield Road is shut completely until 13 November. If it is on your school run, the signed route is Limes Lane, Nan Tucks Lane and Orchard Lane. Houses on the closed stretch can only be reached from the Orchard Lane end.
  • Going to Haywards Heath or the south west? From 1 to 3 October the A272 is shut at Hadlow Down; before that you will sit at temporary lights there.
  • The 19:07 from London Bridge still gets you to Crowborough by train. The gamble is the 22:07, which stops at Oxted Monday to Thursday.
  • Commuting from Uckfield or Buxted? Park at Crowborough or Eridge instead; the car park season ticket is honoured.
  • Want to say it to their faces? Southern’s senior managers are at Crowborough station on Friday 2 October, 7.30am to 9am.

East Sussex Highways publishes a live list of current works. The county’s planned-works map covers the whole 2026/27 financial year, including grass cutting and patching schedules. It does not show reactive repairs, so a pothole gang that appears overnight will not be on it.

The routes that matter

Crowborough has four ways out and each one fails differently.

  • The A26 through the town. Beacon Road and Eridge Road are the same road, and it is the one most of the town uses every day: north to Eridge and Tunbridge Wells, south to Uckfield and on to Lewes. Single carriageway throughout, with the town-centre junctions and the supermarket entrance as the pinch points.
  • West to the A22 at Nutley. Crowborough Road runs out to meet the A22 at Millbrook Hill, and the A22 is the route to East Grinstead, Gatwick and the M23. September’s night closures there are finished.
  • The A267 east. Mayfield and Heathfield, and the fallback when the A22 is down. Narrow, hilly and slow, and it closes itself on October nights.
  • South to the coast. Eastbourne, Hailsham and Polegate are reached via the A22 or the A267 and take longer than the map suggests, because almost none of the route is dual carriageway.

Parking, and the charge people miss

Crowborough station car park is run by APCOA and has 119 spaces, including five disabled bays and four with electric charging. It costs £6.60 all day Monday to Friday, £3.40 from 5pm, and £3.20 at weekends, with a weekly ticket at £25.40, a monthly at £90.70, a quarterly at £263.50 and an annual at £834.50. A 15p convenience fee is added to every tariff and daily rates expire at 4am. Blue badge holders park free once registered through APCOA’s portal. Full detail on the trains page.

Ashdown Forest car parks charge. All 45 of them, at £2 for an hour, £2.50 for two, £4 for four and £5 all day, paid by app, by phone on 0330 333 8446, or by card at the Forest Centre machines. Blue badge holders are exempt. This catches out people who remember the Forest as free parking, and it applies to the walking car parks as well as the visitor centre. The location code is the same at every car park, 661122, so you can move between them on one ticket. Concessionary annual passes are available to people on Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Potholes, blocked drains, broken street lights and damaged signs go to East Sussex Highways, not to Wealden District Council. The report form is at live.eastsussexhighways.com/report-problem, and the contact centre takes calls on 0345 60 80 193.

Wealden District Council handles bins, planning and council tax. East Sussex County Council handles the roads. A plan to merge both into a single East Sussex Council in April 2028 was paused on 7 September 2026, so the split stands for now.
