Southern has pushed the Uckfield line speed restriction back three weeks, to at least Monday 5 October. Eleven weekday trains still stop short at Crowborough.

Crowborough will be the end of the line for another three weeks. Southern has extended the temporary Uckfield line timetable to at least Monday 5 October 2026. It had been due to end on Tuesday 15 September.

The change is on the operator’s own service updates page, which now heads the notice “Temporary amendments to some services between Uckfield and Oxted until at least Monday 5 October”. That makes it five weeks of amended service rather than two.

What is actually wrong

A Network Rail speed restriction is in place between Uckfield and Oxted. With trains running slower, fewer of them fit on the single-track branch, so Southern has thinned the timetable rather than let delays build through the day.

Southern’s stated cause is the weather. “The recent record-breaking hot weather and sustained low rainfall has affected track conditions in some areas, meaning temporary speed restrictions need to remain in place,” the notice says. It points to a Network Rail programme to protect the railway from extreme weather, “supported by a £2.6 billion investment in track maintenance and renewals”.

The operator also says the revised timetable was designed around schools, “including protecting key services used by schoolchildren travelling to and from school”.

The eleven weekday services that change

The pattern is unchanged from the start of the month. On Mondays to Fridays, six London Bridge trains terminate at Crowborough and five Uckfield departures start from it, with a replacement bus covering the missing leg.

Two other changes sit alongside them:

  • the extra 07:03 Uckfield to London Bridge is not running
  • the 06:07 from London Bridge and the 07:33 from Uckfield are running with additional coaches to carry the peak

Weekends are not affected. Southern says the usual timetable operates on Saturday and Sunday with no planned changes.

What it means for you

  • Do not plan on 15 September any more. The disruption now runs to at least Monday 5 October, and “at least” is Southern’s own wording.
  • Journey planners are only loaded to Friday 18 September. Anything you look up for the last fortnight of September may not yet show the amended times, so check again nearer the day.
  • If you park at Uckfield or Buxted on a car park season ticket, you can use Crowborough or Eridge at no extra cost for the whole period.
  • Your ticket is accepted elsewhere. Southeastern between Tunbridge Wells and London, and alternate Southern and Thameslink services between Haywards Heath or Three Bridges and London, both at no extra cost.
  • Allow 35 minutes for the bus leg towards London. On every one of the five affected departures the bus leaves Uckfield 35 minutes before the train leaves Crowborough: 08:09 for the 08:44, 11:09 for the 11:44, and so on.
  • Southern says staff will be on site to help with onward travel.

Driving instead is not a clean alternative this month either. The A22 at Wych Cross and the A264 at Withyham are both shut overnight to 19 September, and Framfield Road at Buxted closes round the clock from 21 September to 13 November. Our Crowborough roadworks and travel page has the phasing.
