Crowborough has become the end of the line. A temporary Southern timetable took effect on Tuesday 1 September and runs until at least Tuesday 15 September, and under it eleven services either terminate at Crowborough or start from it, with a replacement bus covering the last stretch to Uckfield.

The cause is a speed restriction imposed by Network Rail between Uckfield and Oxted. Fewer trains fit on the line when they are all running slower, so Southern has thinned the timetable rather than let delays build through the day.

Crowborough itself keeps its London service. It is the stations beyond, Buxted and Uckfield, that lose trains, and Crowborough that becomes the interchange.

Which trains are affected

Six southbound services from London Bridge now terminate here. Five northbound services to London Bridge now begin here. The affected departures fall three hours apart through the day, from the 07:07 out of London Bridge to the 22:07.

Two further changes hit the morning peak in opposite directions:

  • The additional 07:03 Uckfield to London Bridge is not running at all.
  • The 06:07 from London Bridge and the 07:33 from Uckfield are both running with additional coaches, which Southern says is to improve peak capacity.

Southern also says the revised timetable was drawn up “including protecting key services used by schoolchildren travelling to and from school”, which matters in a town whose secondary pupils travel in both directions along this line.

Why the trains are slower

Network Rail imposed the restriction because the ground under the track has moved. Its own explanation of the mechanism is blunt: “very hot and dry weather can dry out the clay soil that much of our railway is built on, causing it to shrink”. Clay “can absorb a lot of water when it’s wet but can severely shrink when it’s dry”, and when it does, “the track becomes uneven so we need to slow trains down to keep you safe”.

Southern’s own notice puts the blame on the same summer: “the recent record-breaking hot weather and sustained low rainfall has affected track conditions in some areas, meaning temporary speed restrictions need to remain in place.”

The Uckfield line is not the only route affected. Southern has a separate temporary timetable on the Arun Valley route between Horsham and Barnham, for the same reason and running to the same date. That is the clue that this is a regional ground-condition problem rather than a fault at one spot near Crowborough.

Network Rail says it is spending £2.6bn on track maintenance and renewals, including drainage, earthworks and monitoring technology, and that it is working with the University of Southampton on longer-term engineering answers to soil moisture deficit.

This is the second serious disruption on the line in three weeks. Urgent track repairs between East Croydon and Uckfield closed services from 07:30 on Saturday 15 August until 21:10 on Wednesday 19 August, according to National Rail’s own incident record.

The drought behind it is documented. The South East was formally in drought when we reported the hosepipe ban in August, and South East Water’s prohibition on eleven uses of a hosepipe is still in force.

What it means for you

  • Check the night before, not the morning of. Southern says journey planners are updated the day before the travelling day. A time you memorised in July is not reliable this fortnight.
  • If you park at Uckfield or Buxted on a season ticket, park at Crowborough or Eridge instead. Southern is allowing it at no extra cost while the temporary timetable lasts.
  • Allow for the bus leg. Where a bus is involved, the connection is built in but slow: the 07:07 arrives and the bus leaves Crowborough at 08:25, and northbound you need to be on a bus out of Uckfield at 08:00 to make the 08:44 train.
  • Your ticket is valid on other routes. Southeastern between Tunbridge Wells and London, and Southern or Thameslink between Haywards Heath or Three Bridges and London, are both accepting Uckfield line tickets at no extra cost. From Crowborough, Tunbridge Wells is the realistic alternative.
  • Keep your ticket if you are delayed. Southern says compensation may be payable and that you will need the ticket and a note of the journey to claim.
  • 15 September is a floor, not a promise. The wording is “until at least” that date.
