Crowborough Town Council has written to Royal Mail over unreliable post, asking when a steady service returns and inviting its managers to a council meeting.
Crowborough Town Council has written to Royal Mail asking it to explain the continuing disruption to post in the town and to say when residents and businesses can expect a reliable service again.
The council says it has received concerns about how reliable and how frequent deliveries are in Crowborough, with reports of ongoing delays. It wrote to Royal Mail following a recent council decision, and announced the move in a press release dated 5 October 2026.
It has also invited Royal Mail managers to come to a future council meeting to explain the situation in person and set out what is being done.
Why the council is pressing
According to the council, the delays are a particular worry for residents who depend on the post for important letters, documents, appointment information and payments. It says businesses in the town are being affected by unreliable deliveries too.
Councillor Matthew Street, who chairs the town council’s Communication and Events Committee, said:
“Residents and businesses in Crowborough need a postal service they can rely on, particularly when important documents, appointments, payments and other essential communications depend on timely delivery. We recognise the work undertaken by Royal Mail staff, but the continuing reports of disruption are causing understandable concern. We are therefore asking Royal Mail for clear answers about the problems affecting Crowborough, what action is being taken and when people can expect a more consistent service.
“We would welcome the opportunity to discuss these concerns directly with Royal Mail management and to work constructively with them to address the issues being raised by residents.”
The four questions
The letter asks Royal Mail for four things:
- An explanation of the current problems affecting deliveries in Crowborough.
- Details of what Royal Mail is doing now to deal with the disruption.
- An indication of when residents and businesses can reasonably expect the service to return to a consistent and reliable level.
- Details of any extra resources or operational changes being brought in to fix the problems.
The council says it recognises how hard it can be to run a reliable postal service and that it appreciates the work of Royal Mail staff. But, it says, because the disruption is continuing and is affecting the community, residents and businesses deserve clear information about what is going wrong and what is being done to put it right.
What it means for you
- No fix date yet. The council has asked Royal Mail for a prompt reply but, as of its release on 5 October, had not said one had arrived. We will report Royal Mail’s answer when it comes.
- A public meeting with Royal Mail is possible. If Royal Mail managers accept the invitation, they would attend a town council meeting, where residents could hear the explanation directly. No date has been set.
- Post that matters may be late. The council’s own concern is letters about appointments, payments and official documents. If you are waiting for something time-sensitive, it may be worth checking with the sender rather than waiting for the post.
- Raising it with the council. The town council says it is acting on concerns it has received. Its offices are at Pine Grove, Crowborough, TN6 1DH, and its website is crowboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk.
Media enquiries about the letter go to the town clerk at clerk@crowboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk, the council says.
