Rotherfield Bonfire on Saturday 3 October and the free town fireworks on Thursday 5 November, plus a home cup tie, a free real ale festival and half term dates.

Bonfire season reaches this side of the Weald on Saturday 3 October, when Rotherfield and Mark Cross march, and the same afternoon Crowborough Athletic have Wimborne Town at home in a cup tie. Heathfield’s bonfire follows a week later. After that the diary runs through a four-day real ale festival on the Spa Valley Railway, half term on Ashdown Forest, and the town council’s free fireworks at Goldsmiths on Thursday 5 November.

  • Crowborough Athletic v Hastings United, Tuesday 29 September, 7.45pm, Charles Century Community Stadium, Fermor Road, TN6 3FY. A home cup tie for the first team; the club’s fixture list does not name the competition (Crowborough Athletic).
  • Crowborough Athletic v Wimborne Town, Saturday 3 October, 3pm, Charles Century Community Stadium. The cup tie earned by beating Hampton & Richmond Borough in a replay (Crowborough Athletic). The club’s published admission prices are for league games, so check with the club for this one. Our report on the Hampton win.
  • Rotherfield and Mark Cross Bonfire Night, Saturday 3 October, from 6pm, Rotherfield village. Fancy dress judging is at 6pm, the procession forms up at 7.30pm and moves off at 7.45pm, and the bonfire and fireworks follow at about 9.45pm. Roads are closed from 7pm to 11pm (Rotherfield and Mark Cross Bonfire Society). Our guide to the night.

  • Frederic Bazille: A Painter of Modern Life, Thursday 8 October, 2pm, Crowborough Community Centre, Pine Grove, TN6 1FE. Free for members, £9 for visitors. Sarah Burles lectures on the friend of Monet and Renoir who was killed at 28 in the Franco-Prussian war, with refreshments afterwards (The Arts Society Ashdown Forest).
  • Crowborough Athletic v Sevenoaks Town, Saturday 10 October, 3pm, Charles Century Community Stadium. Adults £10, concessions £6, under 16s £2. Isthmian League South East (fixtures, admission).
  • Heathfield and District Bonfire Night, Saturday 10 October, procession forming up at about 7.15pm at the Heathfield Tavern, Heathfield. Roads including the High Street and the A265 Cross in Hand Road are closed from 6.30pm to 10.30pm, and entry to the fire site at Heathfield Community Centre is by pre-paid ticket only (Heathfield and District Bonfire Society).

Later in October

  • East Sussex county councillor drop-in, Monday 12 October, 1pm to 3pm, Town Council Chamber, Pine Grove, TN6 1DH. Councillors Catherine Fielding and Sarah Jury take questions on county services such as roads, schools and libraries (Crowborough Town Council).
  • Crowborough Athletic v Erith Town, Tuesday 13 October, 7.45pm, Charles Century Community Stadium. Adults £10. The league match postponed from 5 September (Crowborough Athletic).
  • Spa Valley Railway Real Ale and Cider Festival, Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 October, at Eridge, Groombridge and Tunbridge Wells West stations. Entry to the festival sites is free. Eridge station is open 11am to 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sunday; Thursday evening is Tunbridge Wells West only, 6pm to 10pm, with no trains. Travelling between stations needs a ticket, and an adult day of unlimited travel is £22 (Spa Valley Railway).
  • Ashdown Forest Youth Volunteer Group, Sunday 18 October, 12pm to 3pm, Ashdown Forest Centre, Wych Cross, RH18 5JP. Free, for 13 to 17 year olds, with places reserved in advance (Ashdown Forest).
  • Mini Explorers, Monday 19 October, 10am to 11.30am, Broadstone car park, Colemans Hatch Road, RH18 5JP. £5. Outdoor play and nature discovery for under fives and their families (Ashdown Forest).
  • Crowborough Athletic v Margate, Saturday 24 October, 3pm, Charles Century Community Stadium. Adults £10 (Crowborough Athletic).
  • Model Brick Show, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, Tunbridge Wells West station, Nevill Terrace, TN2 5QY. Model brick displays at the far end of the Spa Valley line from Eridge; fares are on the booking page (Spa Valley Railway).
  • Crowborough Athletic v Horley Town, Tuesday 27 October, 7.45pm, Charles Century Community Stadium. Adults £10. The league match postponed from 22 September (Crowborough Athletic).
  • Wild Wednesdays, Wednesday 28 October, 10am to 12pm, Broadstone car park. £10. A half term walk with crafts and games for 5 to 12 year olds (Ashdown Forest).
  • Nature Thursdays, Thursday 29 October, finishing at 12pm, Ashdown Forest Centre. £10. A family activity morning for ages 5 to 12. The Forest’s listing misprints the start time, so take it from the booking page (Ashdown Forest).
  • An Evening with Owls, Thursday 29 October, 7pm to 8.10pm, Ashdown Forest Centre. £8.95 for ages 3 to 12, £9.50 for ages 13 and over. Now sold out on the organiser’s booking page, so do not turn up without a ticket. Doors open at 6.45pm (UK Owl and Raptor Centre).

November

  • Walk with the Wardens, Tuesday 3 November, 10am to 12pm, Hindleap car park, Ashdown Forest. Free, no booking, about two hours on hilly and uneven ground. Dogs are welcome and car parking charges apply (Ashdown Forest).
  • Crowborough Fireworks Display, Thursday 5 November, gates 7pm, display 7.30pm, Goldsmiths Recreation Ground. Part of the town council’s programme of free events, set this year to 90s dance music (Crowborough Town Council). Our fireworks guide has every local bonfire date.
  • Crowborough Athletic v Sheppey United, Saturday 7 November, 3pm, Charles Century Community Stadium. Adults £10 (Crowborough Athletic).
  • Remembrance Sunday parade and service, Sunday 8 November, War Memorial, Chapel Green. The parade assembles in the lower Croft Road car park at 10.20am and marches to Chapel Green for the wreath laying at 11am, followed by a service at All Saints Church. Church Road is closed from 9.45am to 11.30am. St Michael and All Angels, Jarvis Brook, holds its own service at 10.30am (Crowborough Town Council).

Further ahead, the council lists Armistice Day at Chapel Green on Wednesday 11 November and the Christmas Cracker and lights switch-on on Friday 27 November.

Regular events

  • Uckfield parkrun, every Saturday, 9am, Uckfield Rugby Club, Hempstead Playing Fields, Nevill Road, TN22 1LX. Free. A 5k run, jog or walk, off road through Buxted Park, and muddy in winter. Register once before your first visit (Uckfield parkrun). The next is Saturday 3 October.
  • Crowborough Miniature Railway, every Saturday until Bonfire Night, in the grounds of the leisure centre off Eridge Road. A single ride is £1 and a day rover £4 (Crowborough Miniature Railway). The town council’s noticeboard gives the Saturday hours as 2pm to 5pm. Volunteers run it, so a wet day can mean no trains. The next running day is Saturday 3 October.
  • Crowborough Farmers’ Market, fourth Saturday of the month, 9am to 12.30pm, Crowborough Social Club, Croft Road. The market has no website of its own; the details are from the town council’s community noticeboard (Crowborough Town Council). The next is Saturday 24 October.

Getting there

Pine Grove, Croft Road and Chapel Green are within a few minutes’ walk of each other in the town centre. The football ground is at Alderbrook on Fermor Road, and the club puts the walk from the station at 25 to 30 minutes.
